Plasma donation is common in some countries to enable the development of plasma derived therapies that are needed by patients. Our goal is to explain the basics in a simple and respectful way.
Why Plasma Matters
Plasma is the straw-colored liquid portion of blood containing proteins including disease-fighting antibodies. It is used to make plasma-derived therapies that help people facing rare or serious health conditions.
Because plasma cannot currently be manufactured, plasma-derived medicines depend on people choosing to donate.
Plasma is collected through a process called plasmapheresis, where a machine separates plasma and returns the other blood components back to the donor.
At the end of the donation, donors may receive saline to help replace fluids. The body replenishes plasma quickly, often within 48 hours for most healthy adults.
Plasma is used to produce medicines that support hundreds of thousands of people worldwide. The plasma donation process usually takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour. First visits may take longer due to education and screening.
